Wallstreet traded within a wide 250 point range underscoring the ongoing volatility in the US equities market. The DJIA opened lower and went below 11,500 but steadily advanced to breach 11700. It ended higher with moderate gains.
World Crude Prices neared the $113 a barrel level; Gold prices fell below $800 an ounce and the US dollar strengthened and had its longest winning streak against the Euro in 2 years.
The local equities market was flat ahead of the long weekend. From the PSE Memorandum 2008-0832: ..."there will be no trading on August 18 (Monday) in Observance of Ninoy Aquino Day and August 25, 2008 (Monday) in celebration of National Heroes Day, per Proclamation No. 1463 issued on February 18,2008. "

WallStreet finished the week with another huge reversal. After dropping more than 200 points and closing near it low the previous day; the DJIA advanced more than 300 points and ended near its high. The big decline in World Oil prices (more tha $4) to near the $115 a barrel level had investors hoping for further drops in order to restrain inflation and boost prospect for profit growth.
