The U.S. unemployment rate fell in July for the first time in 15 months as employers cut far fewer jobs than expected, giving the clearest indication yet that the economy was turning around from a deep recession.
U.S. employers shed 247,000 jobs in July, the Labor Department said on Friday, the least in any month since last August, taking the unemployment rate down to 9.4 percent from June's 9.5 percent.

WallStreet retreats a bit and the DJIA closes below the 9300 level.
The Philippine Stock Echange resumes trading operations today and the local equities market finally succumbs to a much needed correction. The Philippine Stock Exchange Index (PSEi) opened only slightly lower and was even in positive territory very early in the session. The market however, soon retreated and the drop acclerated throughout the session. It touched its low with only about 15 minutes of trading left before bouncing back up a bit just before the close.
The Philippine Inflation figure for July 2009 came out at 0.2%; a 22-year low.

The Philippine Stock Market - August 3, 2009
The local equities market started slow and initially hovered just under the 2800 level. It soon picked up, and then gathered strong momentum to push the Philippine Stock Exchange Index (PSEi) to its highest close in around 14 months. The expectations of a needed correction remains unheeded.
