The Philippine Stock Market - August 29, 2008
The US equities market advanced more than 200 points overnight.
The Bangko ng Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) as expected raised interest rates by 25 basis points (bps)to keep inflation at bay (Inflation was at a 17-month high of 12.2% last July). This brought the key overnight borrowing rate to 6.00% and key overnight lending rate to 8.00%.
The local equities market seems to have found a support at the 2611-2630 levels the past days. The Philippine Stock Exchange Index (PSEi) opened higher and continued its advance to test the 2700 level.

World Crude Prices neared the $113 a barrel level; Gold prices fell below $800 an ounce and the US dollar strengthened and had its longest winning streak against the Euro in 2 years.
The local equities market was flat ahead of the long weekend. From the PSE Memorandum 2008-0832: ..."there will be no trading on August 18 (Monday) in Observance of Ninoy Aquino Day and August 25, 2008 (Monday) in celebration of National Heroes Day, per Proclamation No. 1463 issued on February 18,2008. "

WallStreet finished the week with another huge reversal. After dropping more than 200 points and closing near it low the previous day; the DJIA advanced more than 300 points and ended near its high. The big decline in World Oil prices (more tha $4) to near the $115 a barrel level had investors hoping for further drops in order to restrain inflation and boost prospect for profit growth.

The local equities market also opened lower because of the big drop in WallStreet. However the Philippine Stock Exchange Index (PSEi) was able to recover and even closed higher near the 2700 level. This is the fourth time in around 2-3 weeks that losses of more than 200 points in the DJIA were shrugged off by the Philippine Stock market.

The Philippine Stock Market - August 04, 2008
The local equities market showed anew its resiliency as it consolidated with an upward just below the 2600 level, even as asian markets were lower. The Philippine Stock Exchange Index (PSEi) moved within a narrow range and closed near its high.

The DJIA gave back most of its gains the previous day as it succumbed to a late selldown. It also closed near the day's low. WallStreet still suffers from extreme volatility.
The local equities market also opened lower because of the drop in the US equities market and the momentum from its slide late yesterday. It however found a support level at the 2560 level within the first half hour of trading and limited its decline. The Philippine Stock Exchange Index (PSEi) then slowly got back its losses and by the final hour of trading; it was already in positive territory. It ended near the day's high.

The local equities market has shown its resiliency the past week as it muted its declines even if the DJIA suffered losses of more than 200 points. We hope that it has already decoupled itself from the volatility in WallStreet and that it would try to build a strong base of its own at the 2500-2600 level.
