Yesterday's market - August 29, 2007

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) dropped 280.28 (-2.10%) the other night (August 28, 2007) and ended at 13,041.85. Another huge drop like that in WallStreet is just too hard to ignore despite the recent advances in the Philippine Stock Market. I purposely did not watch the market lest i too might fall prey to emotional selling.
The local equities market fell upon the opening bell as expected; but this time around, panic selling was tempered.

The 91-day Treasury bills rose its yield to 3.731% from 3.711%.

Last night (August 29,2007); the DJIA advanced by 247.44 (+1.90%) points to close at 13289.29. This early, asian markets are seen to rebound today. A technical chartist in Bloomberg TV is seeing that WallStreet is still in a bullish phase and has not yet turned bearish as some has feared due to the recent drops. Analysts also are looking forward to a US Fed rate cut by Sept 17, 2007; amid recession fears.

The market's advance is a very good step to its recovery. The 3000 key level has been broken convincingly and the day's gains were consolidated.

However, there is still mixed expectations whether the rally signals a turnaround (and momentum will carry the market higher) or just a technical bounce (and may succumb to an early bout of profit taking).

The huge advance today showed that the market still has its fundamental intact and what is just needed is investor confidence to be built up and sustained.

The chart gap at the 3106-3124 was closed. But today, a new gap was opened at the 2996-3019 levels.

The performance of the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) will be keenly watched.

Before the market opens - August 21, 2007

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) surged by 233.30 (1.82%) points and ended at 13,079.08 on Friday after the US Federal Reserve lowers the discount rate from 6.25% to 5.75%. The move by the Fed is seen as a proactive stance in addressing the subprime woes currently plaguing the financial markets and has somehow boosted the confidence of investors.

Glogal equities markets rallied yesterday. The Philippine Stock Market was closed yesterday.

Last night the DJIA advanced further by a modest 42.27 (+0.32%) points to close at 13121.35.

The Philippine Stock Market falls more than 6% and breaks below 3000

As the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) posted another triple digit drop of 167.45 (-1.29%) points and broke below the 13,000 level (closed at 12,861.47), the local equities market shifted to panic mode. There was an overwhelming flood of selling activity as investors sought to cash out.

The sub-prime loans debacle has spread to financial institutions and its extent still gives uncertainty to financial markets. Asian markets were down as world equities markets suffered from this phenomenon which is becoming global.

The day saw a continous and steep downward spiral of the Philippine Stock Exchange Index (PSEi) as emotional selling ruled the market.

Invitation to be a Speaker (postponed)

Got an invitation some time last month from St. Paul University of Manila to be a Speaker on "Investing in the Stock Market". It was scheduled for tomorrow; but just got word that it has been indefinitely postponed due to the cancellation if classes because of the typhoon.

The Philippine Stock market falls by more than 4% as WallStreet drops more than 200 points

Market Comment / Quotes from an interview:

............." Investors are reluctant to take positions because of heightened risk that what they buy now may lead to losses tomorrow"....................

..........."Investors prefer to cash out as much as possible because they are worried about the size of the impact of subprime loan losses on financial markets'............"Stocks with good earnings and solid fundamentals are getting some favor"................

The PSEi now is attempting to close the chart gap at the 3090-3127 levels opened last March 20-21, 2007. Index issues are still experiencing bouts of selling and may keep on weighing the market.
Select second and thirdliner issues did not touch or even come near the lows they reached last August 6, 2007 (when the PSEi closed at 3256.99 and was even higher than today's levels). This may indicate some kind of support on the smaller cap stocks.

The day's market - August 14, 2007

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) was up in early trade but a late sell-off had it giving back its gains. It even ended lower by 3.01 points to close at 13236.53.

The Philippine Stock Market continues to track the US equities market; and today it also mirrored its movement. Just like in WallStreet, the local equities market opened on the upside but a selldown had it closing lower by 3 points.

Market volatility still hounds investors - August 13, 2007

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) on Friday was down by more than 200 points at one point; before rebounding to limit its losses to 31.14 (-0.23%) points and close at 13,239.54. Even with the US Federal Reserve and European Central Bank infusing much needed liquidity into the markets, worries on the extent and possible contagion of US sub-prime home lendings continue to rattle investors. Even acquisitions and mergers which had been driving up WallStreet the past months, are now affected because of credit concerns.

All these factors now weigh on the local equities market.

The day's market - August 10, 2007

The expected correction in the Philippine Stock Market ensued. But because the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) dropped by a whopping 387.18 points, local equities also fell heavily upon the opening bell.

WallStreet is still in a very volatile situation. It opened down by more than 200 points in the first ten minutes as investors worried that the problems in the sub prime housing sector would spillover to financial institutions. In an hour, losses were down to just about 100 points but it again fell to constant selling pressure. An hour before closing it was down by more than 200 points but losses still deepened and the DJIA closed at 13270.68 or about 2.83% lower.

The quote from an interview which came out in an article in BusinessWorld today, should read........"if there's really no news to further boost the market, the market will be correcting itself after three days of rally. It will try to look for a base, but 3400 could be its immediate RESISTANCE (not SUPPORT)........

A previous quote in the same article also reads.....the Dow Jones rally boosted the local market, even if the latter failed to breach the 3400 level.......

The day's market - August 06, 2007

Another huge drop in WallStreet stymied the expected (but more of a much hoped for) rebound. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) fell by 281.42 (-2.09%) to close at 13181.91. These huge declines are very hard to ignore despite the buying momentum observed in the local equities market last friday. Upon the opening bell, sellers resumed to exert pressure the market and bargain hunters stepped back anew and held of buying.

The market is now 15% off the high of 3820 set just last July 13. The issue of investor confidence is the main drag on the Philippine Stock Market. Investors must remain convinced of the fundamentals of the market and the overall economy. A rebound within the week may be expected with oversold thirdliners seen to be bought up by bargain hunters.
