Trading in the PSE the day after Christmas - 2007

After a four-day break, trading in the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) resumed today. WallStreet has advanced by about 300 points since Friday.

With investors still caught up in the holiday mood, the local equities market immediately opened higher. And as most selling orders were already matched last week before the long break, year-end window dressing drove the market to higher levels.

Overnight, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) was up by 38.37 points and closed at 13,245.64

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) reduced interest rates by 25 basis points. Its borrowing rate is now at 5.25% and its lending rate at 7.25%. The reduction was the third in a series since October this year.

Without the drag of WallStreet declining, the local equities market had a rally to close strong for the long four-day Christmas break.

The local equities market virtually ignored the movement in WallStreet (which was able to recover from a more than 120 point drop in the early going). The Philippine Stock Exchange Index (PSEi) opened lower and surprisingly, it immediately went into a steep spiral downwards. It was not able to recover and investors and analysts were hard up in looking for a major reason for the day's big decline.
It was however noticeable that foreign brokerages were selling down blue chip issues and select property stocks. We can only surmise that it is part of the year-end winding down of their portfolios before they get back into the market by January next year.

China raised its Reserve Rate Requirement by 100 basis points to 14.5% (the highest in a decade) as it tries to cool its economy to prevent it from overheating. This move cuts liquidity by more than $40 billion.

The dollar reserves of the Philippines fell slightly in November (2007) from its October (2007) levels.


PSEi previous close - 3745.39 (December 07, 2007)

WallStreet did not provide any leads as it expects a 25 to 50 basis points cut in interest rates by the Federal Reserve Board.

Asian markets were mostly down in the morning trade.

The local equities market sharp drop was unexpected. A consolidation at the 3700 level was seen. The decline however is still not a cause of worry and the PSEi just partially closed the chart gap at the 3648-3678 levels.
The 3800 level remains an upside target.

Some investors are trying to speculate on a possible interest rate cut by the US Federal Reserve Board next week(and possibly by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas also later on). A rate cut locally, can bring in more liquidity to our financial system that may be channeled to equities. With interest rates and the US dollar going down, the stock market becomes a more attractive investment for investors.
But barring any more turmoil, political upheavals and other major surprise; the year-end rally in the Philippine Stock Market is on its way with the 3800 level its near term target.

It is quite hard to get back into a trading mode after an extended break and after being clueless in the past day's market and stock movements. And with last Thursday's Manila Peninsula takeover incident to be factored in, it was really a "watch and wait" attitude in the first minutes of trading. But as WallStreet surged, it was easy to see that the local equities market was caught up in another euphoric run up. The mood was light especially we are already into the month of December.

Back from a break

Just got back from after an extended break.

I last observed the trading last Thursday (November 29, 2007) wherein the local equities market was surging by around a hundred points before word got out that the Magdalo soldiers walked out of their trial. Within minutes, the selling orders began pouring in and the gains were nearly wiped out as worries surfaced when the soldiers and their supporters (some of them armed) next holed out at the Manila Peninsula Hotel (which was just next to the Philippine Stock Exchange Tower One in Makati.

Last minute buying for the month end window dressing had the market close up by around 40 points.

As we left Makati before one pm, the front of the Manila Peninsula Hotel was already heavily barricaded by police cars. It was also observed that there were a handful of people at the Ninoy Aquino monument. Though elsewhere, everything seemed normal

The incident gave rise to new worries that the recent market performance will be erased specially if it extends and threatens the peace and order situation of the country. Before our flight, the last message we got was that the SWAT team was getting ready to take the hotel.

When we got to our destination, it was a welcome relief that we got word that the incident was already over though there was a curfew that night. The media coverage abroad was sketchy and did not provide details.

And as any stockmarket investor should do during a vacation, I did not worry and did not monitor the market until i got back. We liquidated part of our portfolio (at a slight loss) before leaving so as to have cash when the market goes down further and left part of in in order to be able to ride any recovery.

And today, the recovery was well on its way. Hopefully, this is the year end rally we are expecting.

With WallStreet closed for Thanksgiving, there was no leads for the Philippine Stock Market. Trading in the local equities market was flat at just below the 3500 level. The computer system in trading was also not computing the Philippine Stock Exchange Index (PSEi) and it just gave intermittent updates starting at 10:00 am. To give us an idea on how trading of stocks was going, we just kept track of the number of gainers and decliners.

The monetary autorities decided to cut policy rates by 25 basis points; setting interest rates at around a 15year low.
This set back the rates at which the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) borrows from or lends to banks from 5.75% and 7.75% six weeks earlier to only 5.5% and 7.5% respectively. (The BSP's overnight borrowing rate of 5.5% is its lowest since January 1995).

Overseas Filipinos' remittances for the first nine months of 2007 hit $10.47 bn; up 14.98% from the same period last year.
For September alone, it was at $1.139 bn, 5.56% lower than August's $1.206 bn.
