Most of the market's gains of 35.08 pts today, was courtesy of three stocks only. These were blue chips PLDT or TEL(+14.82 pts), ALI (+8.77 pts) and AC (+6.07%pts).

Decliners outnumbered gainers as the smaller cap issues (mostly in the M-O sector)fell to selling/profit taking. Gold prices fell more than $6.00 and was below the $730 an ounce level.

Value turnover was also thinner than usual.

If the DJIA does not fall and if the new Senate investigations that allege Comelec Chairman Abalos of committing bribery does not rattle investors anew; third quarter window dressing may have the market testing the 3480-3500 resistance.

At this point, we found out that; at the Senate investigation on the controversial National Broadband Project deal investigation (which was televised); the First Gentleman was named by Jose de Venecia III, as the "Mystery man" who was at one of his meetings with Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chairman Benjamin Abalos.

This revelation opens up another political controversy in the domestic front. Investors are wary that this may start renewed and lenghty political bickerings which may dampen investor sentiment.

The market has been able to put politics in the backseat for some time now. But this new "issue" may add another "Uncertainty" in the market and may threaten to overshadow the moves of the US Federal Reserve Board later.

Early in the day, around the vicinity of the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) Makati trading floor area; there were lots of policemen on heightened alert as the decisions on the cases against the former President Joseph Estrada were scheduled to be promulgated. But curiously, there was no conglomeration of protesters in sight. The atmosphere was peaceful and not tense.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) advanced by 180.54 points overnight in WallStreet and closed at 13,308.39.

The market started cautiously as expected. The decision on the cases against the former President Estrada came out early at around this time. The court proceedings were not protracted, unlike previous high profile cases. There was no time for the heightened emotions of the former President's supporters to build up; as the Guilty verdict on the plunder case against him was read at once.

When it was evident that no untoward and violent incidents/events were forthcoming, the market steadily advanced and gained momentum. Mining issues and select small cap stocks led the market on the onset. And when calmness and investor confidence came back, the index issues followed.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) was up by 91.12 points overnight in WallStreet and it closed at 13448.86.

open - 3321.70 (up 9.40 points)

The market opened on the upside as the gains in the US equities market provided a boost in investor sentiment. It moved however moved just within the 3320-3350 range. The PSEi was already up by around thirty points in the first twenty minutes of trading and it just preserved the day's gains for the rest of the trading session.

The market was able to hold at the 3300 level. The market was buoyed up by the advance in the DJIA last night. It also got a lift from the recovery of Meralco(+7.79%) shares which was battered the past two days as investors sold it down ahead of its ex-dividend date.
The day's advance however was limited as PLDT and Meralco already accounted for 20 points of the day's gains. The next few day's are still critical in building up market confidence.

The average rate of the 20-year T-bond rose to 8.599% during yesterday's auction from a comparable debt paper issued in December which had a rate of 7.774%

In the morning trade, the Philippine peso was hovering around the PhP 46.6 level agains the US dollar.

WallStreet was closed for the Labor Day Holiday. The local equities market continued to look for leads. And as observed from yesterday that the upward trajectory momentum was already waning, the market opened lower upon the opening bell.

If the US equities market fails to provide a boost and the PSEi does not manage to hold at the 3,300 level, the support is seen at the 3217-3267 levels. Investors confidence remains to be edgy. Even the favored second and thirdliners are taking backseat and were not leading any charge.

Among many technical analysts, it is significant that the 3400 level be breached and the market stay above it. Failure to do so and a break below the 3200 level may be seen as a formation of a head and shoulders chart pattern. If many of them looks at it this way, it could be a self-fulfilling prophecy as fund managers and investors may sell down when the chart is seen, even to be just likely heading that way. This selldown then drags the market lower and erode more; the still fragile investor confidence and would likely disregard any fundamentals. When this happens, the 3000 level would be the initial target.

A concern that may crop also up among investors in the near term is the coming promulgation of the decision on the cases against the former President Estrada. Any decision will likely spark outrage and protest from one of the contending parties. It is expected to come out in the next two weeks. It is hoped that any fall out will be shortlived and would not rattle the financial markets.

WallStreet also is still looking for clues on how the US Federal Reserve would act in its Sept 17 meeting in order to address the sub-prime lending woes still hounding them.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) was up by 119.01 points on Friday and closed at 13357.74

open - 3370.93 (up 5.64 pts)

The market opened relatively flat and was undecided on where to go. After 10 minutes of switching from the positive and negative territory, it started to gain momentum and reached a high of 3379.63 (up 14.34 points) by 10:00 am.

It managed to stay on the upside for the next thirty minutes. The market then slowly declined and reached a low of 3356.41 (down 8.88 points) by 11:00 am.

The rest of the trading day was uneventful and the market managed to eke out a small gain at the end of the trading session.

The market tried to close the gap at the 3382 level but fell a bit short. The momentum seems to have faltered. The sentiment that fueled the nearly 150 point rally in the last two days of last week; seems to be fading. A new confidence boost is needed or a consolidation may be seen. There were several chart gaps opened during the market's recent rally in the past two weeks.
