WallStreet continued its bounce back as its rebound the past two days has almost gotten back its losses from its declines last Thursday (July 24) and Monday (July 28).
The DJIA opened higher, goes above the 11500 level, then gave back its gains by mid-session. However, it never went into negative territory. It rallied in the last couple of hours of trading and closed strong to end near its high.
The local equities market got an initial boost from the rally in the US and immediately opened higher. The Philippine Stock Exchange Index (PSEi) however succumbed to profit taking and selling pressure when it failed to hold above the 2600 level.

The DJIA suffers declines more than 200 points for the second time in three (trading) days and closes near its low.
The IMF says that there is no end in sight in the US housing slump. Yesterday, two regional lenders with assets of around $3 bn were closed down by US regulators.
The US budget deficit is seen to be at $482 bn in 2009. The stimulus package and war spending seems to be not helping.
The local equities market was again rattled by this huge drop in WallStreet. The Philippine Stock Exchange Index (PSEi) opened immediately lower but it was able to hold its ground above the key 2500 level.

The Philippine Stock Market - July 21, 2008
The local equities market advanced today with moderate gains. The Philippine Stock Exchange Index (PSEi) opened higher and stayed in positive territory throughout the trading session. It closed near its high above the 2400 level.
The country posted its third straight monthly surplus in June as expenditures were below target.

After an erratic start, the DJIA mounted another huge rally and closed at its high. The DJIA again ended with gains of more than 200 points.
World Crude Prices also fell to around $130 a barrel.
The local equities market also got an initial boost with the big rally in WallStreet. The Philippine Stock Exchange Index (PSEi) opened higher and tried to advance but it somehow was not able to gather enough momentum. It even closed at its low in negative territory. The aggressive interest rate hike took many analysts amd investots by surprise as most were expecting a rise of only 25 basis points.
The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) raised its key policy rates by 50 basis points yesterday to bring the overnight borrowing rate to 5.75% and the overnight lending to 7.75%. It has tightened policy for the second month in a row as the BSP also raised rates by 25 basis points last month (the first rate increase in 3 years).
The BSP said that this was necessary to combat inflation that is running at 14-year highs.

The local equities market tried to hold its ground in the first half hour of trading. Selling pressure however soon overcame the market as most investors liquidated before the weekend. The Philippine Stock Exchange Index (PSEi) ended slightly lower as punters also took profits on the select thirdliner movers which enjoyed brisk trades since yesterday.

The local equities market got a boost from the combination of the advance in WallStreet and the drop in Oil prices. The Philippine Stock Exchange Index (PSEi) again opened strong as it challenged the 2500 level after just a half hour of trading. It then consolidated the rest of the session and kept most of its gains.

The US equities market tried to hold its ground in the first hour of trading, but with Oil hits a new high above the $144 a barrel, the DJIA steadily declined. A strong sell-off late in the session had the DJIA close near its low and deeper in a bear market (defined as 20% below its 52-week high).
The local equities market immediately followed this lead. The Philippine Stock Exchange Index (PSEi) immediately fell lower and was down more than a 100 points just in the first half hour of trading. The PSEi touched new 22 month low levels but bargain hunting cut losses by almost half.

Jittery investors further sold down the market as the Philippine Stock Exchange Index (PSEi) broke the 2434 support. It is still looking for a support level as it touched new 21 month lows.
