WallStreet soared on the news that the US Treasury plans to buy up to a trillion dollars worth of toxic debt from banks. This would hopefully revive lending and stimulate the recession-hit economy. The DJIA ended near its high and advanced nearly 7%; its biggest one-day percentage gain since last October. US Home Sales also rose unexpectedly and boosted sentiment further.
The local equities market opened significantly higher on back of the huge advance in WallStreet. The Philippine Stock Exchange Index (PSEi) extended its gains from the past days and topped the 1900 level.

The Philippine Stock Exchange Index (PSEi) advanced moderately as the selloff in TEL seems to have tapered off and bargain hunters stepped in (together with the company Share Buyback Program).

The Philippine Stock Market - March 16, 2009
The local equities market fell heavily as it was weighed down by the huge drops in PLDT (TEL) and Meralco (MER) shares. Investors reacted on the news that came out last Friday regarding the buying of 20% of Meralco from the Lopez Group by PLTL (a member of the PLDT group). The Philippine Stock Exchange Index (PSEi) broke its immediate supports as it went into a freefall.
