The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) was down by 77.79 points and closed at 13792.47.
Gold was down by $4.50 an ounce and Oil also down by $3.15 a barrel.
There was really no push factor for the market to rise and the local equities market just consolidated below the 3800 level with a downward bias.

It continues to be a good sign that the market is keeping a positive bias despite the long lull in trading next week. The Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) will be closed on Monday.
Investors and traders were kept glued to the market because of the brisk trading in the Oil and Mining Stocks which dominated the Gainers.
Should everything go well over the long weekend, trading on Tueday and Wednesday next week may be a good time to pick out stocks for the year end rally. While prices may not have gone to bargain levels that we would have liked to buy in, the resiliency of the market has shown issues which have the strength to go up further later this year.
Earnings reports, stock specific developments, and the action of the US Federal Reserve on the US interest rates (and WallStreet's action and reaction); will be worth keeping a close tab on.

The days' market - October 24, 2007

The Dow Jones Industrial Average continued its recovery. It advanced another 109.26 points (0.81%) to close at 13676.23.

The gains in WallStreet again inspired investors in the local equities market. President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo also came over the PSE Makati Trading Floor to ring the opening bell of the trading day. It was to show that everything is normal after friday's explosion in the Glorietta Mall. Sentiment got a boost and the Philippine Stock Market continued its rebound.

Panic seems to have subsided and this is a good sign. Though the market had a good rebound; caution is still the order of the day. Most of the day's gains were given up easily.
Also, there is no new news or development that could propel the market higher immediately at this point. Rather, recent events even tend to dampen investor sentiment. Besides, WallStreet is still prone to high volatility movements and the local equities market can still feel its reverberations.

The recovery was weak as sellers once more kept the market from going higher. Investors were very cautious, and quick in unloading their portfolio as they preferred to be liquid.

Though the market was down nearly 4.0%, panic selling was tempered somehow and was evident in just the first few minutes of trading wherein sellers sold at whatever price buyers were willing to buy. It was not really a Black Monday for us. It was also more of a Blue Monday. Last Friday's buyers were beaten black and blue and monitors turned bloody as decliners (and sell-downs) were strewn across-the-board.

As trading progressed, bargain hunters were willing to step in for opportunities to buy stocks at lower levels despite the obvious selloff. However, they were also quick to take profits and sellers still prevailed.

A lot of uncertainties remain in the market. WallStreet is still prone to a deeper correction, Oil prices are still at their record highs; and the Friday's blast at the Glorietta mall is still under investigation.

The market correction (after the very strong and very fast runup to new record highs) that some investors (including us) have been waiting for is underway and will likely persist until November. Next week, trading will be cut short. October 29 will be suspended to give way to the Barangay Elections and the weekend will be for the All Saints and All Souls Day.

But will this pullback still be a healthy one and would just be a prelude to a December yearend rally to the 4,000 level? We hope so. We hope too, that this not the beginning of the end.

Over the weekend - October 20-21, 2007

The Dow Jones Industrial Average went into a tailspin last Friday. It lost 366.94 points (-2.64%) to end at 13522.02.
The ongoing credit market concerns obviously still weigh down WallStreet. Investors are still wary of the state of the US economy and the now surging oil prices which even touched a record $90/barrel level.

With Friday's blast in the Glorietta mall being suspected to be a terrorist attack, the local equities market may be headed into a Black Monday of its own. It is hoped that investors will not fall to a widespread panic selling and cause a market freefall.

After the trading day - October 19, 2007

Earlier this afternoon, an explosion rocked the Glorietta Mall in Makati. Initial reports had several people killed and dozens injured. Today is the 20th anniversary of the "Black Monday" crash in WallStreet.
In October 19, 1987, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) fell 508 points or nearly 23%. (From 2246.74 down to 1738.74) The DJIA is currently at 13888.96.

Some analysts have made some comparisons to the conditions then and today's situation. The Dow had been up 18.5% for the year just before the crash and at its late august peak had risen 43.6% for the year. This year the Dow had just passed 13,000 for the first time and then immediately zoomed further up to 14,000 (and up to now is trying to stay near this level) as investors looked past growing concerns about tightening credit markets and a faltering housing sector.

But it is also pointed out by other market watchers that at that time the Federal Reserve was busy fighting inflation and interest rates higher. The price to earnings ratios back then were also much higher.
The market is also very different today with the technology and the investment boom in the past twenty years already having a huge impact on the fundamentals.

January-September (2007) budget deficit

The deficit for the first nine months of the year was at PhP 40 billion, which is PhP 14 billion lower than the programmed deficit of PhP 54 billion.

Revenues - PhP 812.3 bilion (+13.5% year-on-year)
Expenditures - PhP 852.30 (+9.8%)

Revenue flows - short of the goal by PhP 24.70 billion
Actual disbursement - PhP 38.70 less than the programmed PhP 891 billion

In September:
Deficit totaled PhP 14.5 billion from PhP 16.2 billion in 2006.
Expenses were at PhP 95.4 billion (PhP 2.3 billion less than the limit set by the Development Budget Coordination Committee - DBCC)
Revenues totaled PhP 80.9 billion (around PhP 300 million less than programmed)
The government actually set a PhP 17 billion deficit.

Total volume of trade was at 48,445,000 shares with a value of PhP 267,693,500. The day's closing price was at PhP 5.50 or a gain of 17.52% over its offering price.

It was fortunate that its listing was not dampened by the market sentiment. Market demand for its shares got a boost from the continued increase of remittances of OFWs which is its core business.

PLDT ADRs were down by $1.61 to end at $69.11. Converting at PhP 44.20 (which is at seven year high levels agains the dollar); this comes out at PhP 3054. PLDT closed yesterday at PhP 3135. The market was headed for a retreat early on.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) surged by 191.92 points and ended at a new all time record high close of 14,087.55

Gold prices were nearing the $750 an ounce level.

PLDT ADRs were up in WallStreet by $2.20. It is more than PhP 2994 when converted. Yesterday, PLDT last traded at PhP 2905 in the Philippine Stock Exchange.

The local equities market immediately got a big boost upon the opening bell.
