WallStreet retreated as investors were disappointed with the data which showed that US retail sales for April was at -0.4%. Though this was better than March (-1.3%); a negative figure somehow dampened enthusiasm on the pace of economic recovery. (January and February figures were positive).

The local equities market as expected was lower because of the huge drop in the DJIA. The Philippine Stock Exchange Index (PSEi) however was still able to limit its losses as the smaller cap issues continue to enjoy brisk trading.
